Post Thoughts

It's not raining! Could still do with a little sun but I don't think thats gonna happen.  The edit is done for all intensive purposes.  Still waiting on the end credit info as well as a few other elements to go in the final presentation but the video is cut.  I just need to do that final pass in Color and do my dream grade for the final look.  I am very pleased over all.  RED is great.  It really is.  I have never had such crisp and clean images to work from.  Because of the 4K there is so much information to work with that the images post color grading look simply amazing.  I am not sure I would have been able to pull this off with any standard definition format nor prosumer HDV format either.

The overall workflow with the RED format could do with a little streamlining and simplifying as well as some final releases for the bug prone beta software they are circulating...but all in all, dare I say this...RED is comparable with the results you might expect from film.  That being said, this is not film.  I don't think it reads like film and I don't think it looks like film.  I am a firm believer that if you like the look of film (and of course you can afford it) shoot on film.  Trying to make things look like film in post I believe is a misappropriation of time because why not use the time in post to create things rather than fix things.  I know not everyone has the budget, just those are my thoughts.

I think the RED camera/s are an amazing piece of technology that for the first time will be able to bring to us that world that has been only reserved for big budgeted or funded film makers.  What I mean by that is this camera compares with the big guns of movie production. The RED One is not cheep but by comparison, it might as well be the price of a home video camera.  It ups the playing field as never before and makes all the previous advancements in consumer and prosumer technology pale in comparison.  In a historical comparison, it does what the jump from VHS cameras to Hi8, to MiniDV to DvCam to HDV did over the course of 15 - 20 years all in one go multiplied by 100.  RED is not prosumer though, it is professional.  It is the real deal and it is not a "almost as good as" scenerio.  It is as good as and in some cases, better.

Going into this project, it was to be a test for all of us.  Especially from the technological side for Roman, Dan and myself.  No one has made any money here.  We have all done this for our own reasons, on our own time and out of pocket because we all believe that there is something special here. Not only was it great to have another chance to work with Digger T. and for all of us to hone our skills in working with a team of which we can all trust, but...at least for me, it was the chance to answer so many questions and understand a format that seems to have enormous potential.  I have had a lot of people ask me if they should shoot on RED and now I can finally answer...YES!!!  Of course there is a lot one needs to be aware of but now I know all this and can advise from a post production end of what to look out for.  I believe Roman and Dan have also learned a lot from our experiences.  We have already managed to put what we experienced with Blind Generation and use it towards Space Lover to improve on the situation.  I believe there could be another Digger T. production coming soon that we will all be able to further improve upon.

I will be continuing to post more on Blind Generation and Space Lover as well as any other tid bits on "stuff" in the following week but things will definitely be winding down.  Again I would like to thank everyone involved in this project and to all the readers who have taking time out to read "Adventures in RED© ala Blind Generation".
Thanks so much to all ya'alls!
